Scams are becoming more common utilizing artificial intelligence to clone individuals’ voices, putting millions at risk. Fraudsters can replicate someone’s voice using just three seconds of audio—often sourced from videos shared on social media. This technology enables scammers to impersonate victims in phone calls, targeting their friends and family to solicit money.
Starling Bank, an online-only bank, provided a press release emphasizing that these scams could “catch millions out,” with hundreds already affected. A recent survey conducted by the bank in collaboration with Mortar Research revealed that over 25% of more than 3,000 adults surveyed reported being targeted by an AI voice-cloning scam in the past year. Alarmingly, 46% of respondents were unaware that such scams existed, and 8% admitted they would send money to someone they believed was a friend or family member, even if the call seemed suspicious.
Lisa Grahame, Chief Information Security Officer at Starling Bank, pointed out the vulnerability created by individuals frequently posting audio recordings online. “People regularly post content online which has recordings of their voice, without ever imagining it’s making them more vulnerable to fraudsters,” she stated.
To combat this growing threat, Starling Bank recommends that individuals establish a “safe phrase” with their loved ones. This simple, memorable phrase can serve as a verification tool during phone calls, helping to confirm identities. The bank advises against sharing this phrase via text, as it could be intercepted by scammers. If it must be shared this way, the message should be deleted after it has been read.
As AI technology continues to advance, concerns are escalating regarding its potential misuse. The ability to mimic human voices poses significant risks, including unauthorized access to bank accounts and the spread of misinformation. Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced its voice replication tool, Voice Engine, but chose not to release it publicly due to concerns about potential misuse. As AI capabilities grow, so does the need for vigilance and proactive measures to protect against these sophisticated scams.
