RIP Windows 7

As of January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer be supporting or providing updates, particularly security updates for Windows 7 or Server 2008 (R2). Any systems running these operating systems will need to be upgraded to a more recent version soon after to ensure the security of the networks the computers are on.

The upgrades can be done with the purchase of a new key and then upgraded on-site. Most programs and settings should be retained after the upgrade. The user’s files should not be affected and upgrade time should take about an hour for Windows 7 upgrades. The Server 2008 (R2) upgrades could take longer as there is more to the system and more that will need to be checked for functionality. Should anything need to be reinstalled, we can do that at the time of the upgrade or at a later time, should it be necessary.

It is important that the operating system stay up-to-date so the workstations are protected against known vulnerabilities. An out-of-date system can provide much easier access to the computer and network. Once an attacker has access to the local workstation they can then start to target the entire network, including critical resources such as file servers, backup systems, and other networked devices.

As of October 13, 2020, Office 2010 will no longer be supported or receive updates. Computers running this version of Office will need to be upgraded as well. Upgrading the version of Office is much simpler than the upgrade of the operating system and should not take long. This will also require a new key to be purchased and the new software installed.
